Practice-as-Research working group investigates dance practice as a research tool and aims to understand underlying epistemological concerns which can only be generated through a practical approach to studying dance. This DSA working group aims to engage in discussions concerning PaR as a methodology and exchange resources to contextualize the relevance of this method in the field of dance studies.

In this panel discussion, speakers Sarah Wilbur, Jingqiu Guan, and Michael Kliën focus on their respective approaches to PaR and discuss any tensions or opportunities they have encountered in their respective efforts to practice as an axis of inquiry and mode of knowledge production. Wilbur approaches PaR from the realm of infrastructural practices, linking economic to the somatic, Guan shares her experience with PaR integrating choreographic practices, filmmaking, scholarship, and teaching, and Kliën contextualizes his artistic practice as research, specifically in the relation to his laboratory for Social Choreography. As the speakers discuss their respective approaches to PaR, they elaborate on how they view the US universities enabling or constraining PaR.
